Philosophy

The philosophy of Rhythm Works Oz is all in the name: rhythm works. Whether you're looking for motivation, inspiration, rejuvenation or relaxation, rhythm is the key.

The reason for this is simple. Rhythm can be found in every aspect of our lives and as such is an easily identifiable reference point for us all. No matter what culture or way of life we have chosen, rhythm is within us all. A dripping tap, the beat of your heart, the crashing of the ocean waves on the shore: rhythm is all around us.

Cultures around the world have used music and rhythm as an integral part of their bonding, community and ceremonial rituals for thousands of years.

Rhythm is a powerful force. To quote Dorothy Fields from the musical Sweet Charity:

"The Rhythm Of Life is a powerful beat, Puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet, Rhythm in your bedroom, Rhythm in the street, Yes, The Rhythm Of Life is a powerful beat."

Christine Denny

Creative Director and Australia / New Zealand Representative.

Christine Denny is the creator and director of Rhythm Works Oz and has been working in "rhythmic endeavors" for the past 12 years. She began her work as a tap dance specialist which has seen her teach at many of Sydney's leading dance institutes including: Brent Street, ED5 and McDonald College with past students going on to appear in tapping productions such as: Hot Shoe Shuffle, Dein Perry's Steel City and Bootmen, The Shufflin Stonkies, Raw Metal, BPM...Beats Per Minute, Rhythm on Tap, Clickety Clack, Twelve Feet over The Top, Crazy for You and Rhythm Works Oz. As well as conducting master classes for other teachers on "how to teach tap", Christine has also been invited to choreograph, teach, and adjudicate dance festivals all over Australia and the U. K. For the past 8 years Christine has also been playing the drum kit for a number of bands, performing at well known venues in Sydney, recording music and receiving airplay with pop outfit "Sugarhit" on Nova 96.9.

It was the culmination of these two elements: tap dance and drumming, that lead Christine to create a dynamic piece of street theatre involving 30 tap dancers and 40 djembe drummers for the 2003 Bienniale Celebrations in Mackay, North Queensland.

One thing led to another and "Rhythm Works Oz" was born. The perfect blend, it utilizes all of Christine's skills as a communicator, teacher, director, musician, dancer and choreographer. The results are fantastic and in her own words:

"Watching children, adults and professionals come alive when they participate in this rhythmic experience is pure magic. Each person is totally autonomous in the process, yet an important part of the completed rhythm. Everyone becomes part of this human orchestra and they can't help but get swept along with the beat. It's infectious, irresistible and inspirational. I never get sick of bringing this absolute joy to others. It's just fantastic to watch."
